What is Shiatsu? :

Shiatsu is a particular type of manual treatment that originated and developed in Japan. It draws on various cultural references and techniques, giving rise to distinct styles.

The term “Shiatsu” is a combination of “shi” (fingers) and “atsu” (pressure), meaning “finger pressure.”

This particular method has its origins in Eastern medicine and philosophy, which holds that every living organism, including humans in particular, is imbued with vital energy.

The Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare defines it as follows:

“Shiatsu is a treatment in which the thumbs and palms of the hands are used to apply pressure to specific points, with the aim of correcting bodily irregularities, maintaining and improving health, and contributing to the treatment of certain medical conditions.”

Shiatsu is currently defined in Italy as an art for health. Through a precise sequence of pressure applied to the entire body, it helps rebalance the body functionally, physiologically, and energetically. Furthermore, it allows one to regain strength if weakened by stress and tension, always in harmony with nature and without any unpleasant or harmful side effects.

One of its key characteristics is its comprehensive approach to the individual: it goes beyond the simple elimination of superficial symptoms and ailments, but considers and treats the person as a whole, taking into account their full complexity.

The primary purpose of Shiatsu is to stimulate the self-healing capacity inherent in each individual; it therefore helps maintain the body in optimal health.

Shiatsu has been practiced in Italy since the mid-1960s. Since then, various styles have developed, each with a notable and positive evolution, the result of the study and practice of many pioneers and researchers.

In Shiatsu treatment, constant perpendicular pressure is the distinctive characteristic of refined work, which each style implements according to its own scientific, cultural, and technical references.

The professional training of the Shiatsu practitioner is original and autonomous. It is the product of the combination of specific technical and cultural elements that are the heritage of those who research in this field and practice this profession.

Shiatsu practitioners undergo a multi-year training program in which the acquisition of technical, theoretical, and perceptive elements is closely and consistently linked to practice.

Individual Constitution:

The concept of individual constitution, therefore, originates from the moment of conception, in the transition known in TCM as the passage from the Anterior Heaven to the Posterior Heaven, that is, from Chaos to Life. When the ovum, yin, Earth, and the sperm, yang, Heaven, unite, a new being is created; thus, the union of two energies, male and female, represents the spiritual union that allows the incarnation of a soul, the development of a new individuality, thanks to what are called the “three wonderful substances” or “three treasures”: Shen

(spirit), Jing (essence), and Qi (vital breath, energy). According to TCM, these are the forces that are activated and intervene in fetal development and give rise to the unique and unrepeatable psychophysical constitution of each individual, representing the potential of a new organism.

Water Element: The Urinary Bladder

It represents calm, tranquility, and rest par excellence, and in this tranquility lies the strength of humans and their organs. The WATER element houses the basic energy, the vital essence of humanity. Without the balancing force of WATER, the energetic WOOD element would churn in vain, powerless, the FIRE element would lose its harmony, and the EARTH element would lose its ability to absorb nourishment and transform it into energy. It could therefore be said that WATER permeates all the elements. This means, conversely, that a disturbance in WATER will have a greater or lesser impact on the balance of the other elements. The health and strength of WATER depend on the strength of EARTH, which is the mother in the cycle of the elements.

The characteristic strength of this element is calm, a tranquility filled with energy. Those with a healthy WATER element have a strong vital drive and a strong will; They are calm, thoughtful, serious, fearless, courageous but not reckless; they display a constantly fresh curiosity and are interested in everything new. They have a stable structure, strong bones and teeth, good hearing, an erect and relaxed posture, and shiny hair.

Bladder Diseases:

Bladder diseases are a sign of our difficulty in releasing our “waste water,” that is, old memories that no longer satisfy us.

Old beliefs, habits, and thought patterns that are inappropriate for the present situation are all “memories” that “toxicate” our mind, just as toxins do to the body.

When the bladder’s energies function properly, these “toxins” are eliminated without problems. Bladder problems or pain, however, tell us that this isn’t happening properly. They indicate that we’re afraid to abandon or change these habits, beliefs, patterns, or ways of thinking or acting.

An attachment to certain memories, whether satisfying or not, sometimes leads us to become rigid in our lives, to become crystallized, and to the risk of suffering.

These situations translate into bladder tension, and cystitis and inflammation speak to us of this, also informing us that we’re feeling anger or rebellion against our attitude.

Bladder disease can also mean experiencing fears about ancestors that we can’t overcome. Boys who are afraid of their parents, especially their father, or sometimes of their identities (grandparents, teachers, etc.), often express this fear through enuresis (nighttime incontinence).

Girls, on the other hand, tend to express the same fears through repeated bouts of cystitis.
