Shiatsu and the Polyvagal Theory : Shiatsu is a Japanese manual therapy technique based on the stimulation of specific points on the body to promote relaxation, well-being, energy rebalancing, and therefore, an overall improvement in health.

One of the important points that can be worked on in Shiatsu practice is the vagus nerve point, related to the innervation of this nerve, also known as cranial nerve X. The vagus nerve is one of the twelve cranial nerves and is responsible for many important functions in the human body, including the control of the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system is known to promote relaxation and rest, counteracting the action of the sympathetic nervous system, which is involved in the response to danger (commonly called the “fight or flight” response).

The vagus nerve point is located at the nape of the neck, at the level of the third cervical vertebra, on the gallbladder meridian (GB 20). It is frequently stimulated in Shiatsu treatments to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being.

Pressure on this point can help calm the nervous system, lower heart rate and blood pressure, reduce anxiety, and promote a sense of calm and tranquility.

However, it is important to note that the relationship between Shiatsu pressure, on the vagus nerve point and its actual activation and stimulation is a subject of debate. While some Shiatsu proponents believe that pressure on this point, can directly influence the functioning of the vagus nerve and the parasympathetic nervous system, scientific research in this area is still ongoing.

Shen Men – “The Gate of Shen”:

Shen Men: Activating the Point to Find True Joy.

Point 7 of the Heart meridian is located on the wrist joint, near the little finger. It’s easy to find the bump where your thumb rests when locating this point.

There are several acupuncture points on the wrist: this is one of the nine pearls of the body and a crucial step for the proper circulation of Qi (vital energy). When energy flows, the mind also finds peace and harmony. Everything is in its place, everything is simple because it feels right.

In cases of agitation, palpitations, or sleep disorders, one can work on Shen Men, which literally means “The Gate of Shen.”

Shen is important for health and, despite what many believe about personality, it is extremely useful for better understanding where we are on our path.

Accessing the “Gate of Shen” is a method for finding inner peace and peace in the situations around us.

It’s very simple: simply access the meridian’s energy system through Shen Men, point C-7 of the Heart meridian: located in the transverse crease of the wrist, between the pisiform and ulna bones, against the radial border of the flexor carpi ulnaris tendon. It is also the “source” point, the most important point of the meridian and one of the body’s main points. It is indicated for stress-related anxiety, depression, insomnia, palpitations, agitation, and irritability. #shiatsu #shenmen #mentalandphysicalwellbeing
